BROOKS — Retired CSM Daniel James “Jimmy” Mulcahey, 94, passed away on July 14, 2022, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor, where he had resided for the last 10 months.

Jimmy was born in Monroe, the son of Frank and Emma (Sirois) Mulcahey (Staples), and was raised in Brooks with his two sisters. After graduating from high school in 1945 at age 17, Jimmy enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Preble in South Portland. He proudly served his country for over 30 years, attaining the rank of command sergeant major.

Jimmy was a decorated soldier who held a number of leadership positions throughout his military career. He was a military man through and through and would have happily served until the day he died if possible. Jimmy never missed a chance to thank veterans for their service and to remind us to support our troops.

In 1953, while home on leave Jimmy married his beloved wife, Shirley (Libby), and together they raised two daughters. During their 56 years together, Jimmy credited Shirley as being the foundation of their marriage.

After retiring from military service in 1976, Jimmy returned to Brooks and worked at the Togas VA Hospital for 14 years. He was active in the American Legion and in town government, becoming a fixture at the Town Office, where he liked to stay busy lending a helping hand and keeping the tax maps up to date.

Jimmy and Shirley spent their free time golfing, bowling and working outside at their home. Jimmy was also an avid student of military and local history, as well as a collector of historical memorabilia.

Jimmy never quite recovered from Shirley’s death in 2009, but persevered with the help of his family and friends in Brooks. Later in life he wanted to remain at home in familiar surroundings for as long as possible. Thanks to the kindness of friends and family in Brooks he was able to remain there for most of his final years. His daughters would like to thank those who made this possible and the kind friends who sent cards and letters and visited him at the Veterans Home. That meant the world to him.

Jimmy is survived by his daughters, Jamie Mulcahey of Etna and Dawn Mulcahey and her partner Craig Worthley of Hallowell; a sister, Marion Bailey of Belfast; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Jimmy was predeceased by his wife Shirley, a sister, Gladys Kennedy, and his parents.

At Jimmy’s request there will be no funeral service or visiting hours. Interment will be at Kinney Cemetery in Brooks.

Memorial contributions in Jimmy’s memory may be made to the Brooks Congregational Church, 22 Veterans Highway, Brooks, ME 04921.
