NORTHPORT — A local man was killed Tuesday evening when the tractor he was driving along Atlantic Highway (Route 1) left the roadway and rolled over.
According to a press release from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, the Waldo County Dispatch Center received a 911 call about 7 p.m. July 19 that a tractor had left the highway and rolled over.
Scotty Richards, 62, of Northport had been operating a Michigan 55A loader northbound on Route 1. Witnesses observed the loader rolling backward down the roadway before it left the side of the road and rolled over into the ditch. Richards was ejected from the loader and died as a result of his injuries, the press release said.
Members of the Northport Fire Department and deputies from the Sheriff’s Office responded.
A portion of the road was closed while multiple wrecker companies assisted first responders with clearing the scene. The specific cause of the accident remains under investigation, the press release said.
