PROSPECT — The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the possible suicide of a Stockton Springs man believed to have jumped off the Penobscot Narrows Bridge in the early morning hours July 11.

At 4:37 a.m., the Waldo County Communication Center received a 911 report of an abandoned vehicle parked on the bridge with no one present.

Prospect Fire Department personnel and deputies from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, according to a press release July 22 from Chief Deputy Jason Trundy. As a result of their investigation, authorities believe William Burton of Stockton Springs, 66, jumped from the bridge, Trundy said.

The Maine Marine Patrol immediately responded and began conducting a search of the area, the release said. Ongoing searches have not found Burton, and the investigation remains open.

On July 14, Waldo County Sheriff Jeff Trafton told The Ellsworth American, “Evidence points in the direction the person did commit suicide, but we can’t positively say because we haven’t found a body.” Most of the person’s “next of kin have been notified.”

“Bucksport rescue had a boat in the water very quickly” after the call came in, Trafton said.
