BELFAST — Talk about hot to trot.
Despite temperatures approaching 90 degrees and humidity brutally high at 8:30 a.m., more than 100 people showed up to break more than a sweat and burn a ton of calories in the annual “Kilted Canter” 5-kilometer road race on Saturday, July 23.

The 3.1-mile event, part of the weekend’s popular Celtic Festival, started and ended at Belfast Area High School.
Jason Varney, 36, of Belfast covered the course the swiftest in a solid 17 minutes and 34 seconds, a fast time, especially given the extremely hot conditions
David Haluska, 36, of Bangor was second at 17:54, while the first female finisher was Isabella Fryer, 16. Fryer was 15th overall.
The event, which sees a handful of participants wear kilts in the mood and mode of the celebration (this year, one participant sported a plaid necktie), was the second in the Belfast Run Series. The race was hosted by Belfast Rotary.
Up next will be another Rotary-sponsored event, the “Bug Run” on Saturday, Aug. 20, followed by the Waldo County YMCA event on Saturday, Sept. 24 and Lions’ Ghostly Gallop 5K on Saturday, Oct. 29.
The series is supported by the City of Belfast Parks & Recreation Department.
