NORTHPORT — The 39th Coastal Field Hockey Play Day Championships, an annual preseason event for high school squads, will swing in on Tuesday, Aug. 23 as five schools from coastal and central Maine will participate.

Camden Hills of Rockport, Mount View of Thorndike, Boothbay Region, Hampden Academy and host Belfast will participate in the play day, which will begin at 11:30 a.m. on the artificial turf at Point Lookout.

Scoring for the play day is unconventional as one point is earned for a shot on goal saved by the goalie and five points for a goal. Each team will play four games, with a tournament champion declared at the conclusion of the final game based on the accumulation of total team points throughout the day.

Games are 25 minutes running time. Concessions will be available.

The tournament has been an annual precursor to the start of the high school stick season for Midcoast teams since 1983. The event was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19.

In recent years, the tourney has branched out to include teams from the outer reaches of the Midcoast, such as Boothbay Region and Hampden Academy.

The schedule of games for 2022 includes: Mount View versus Belfast, 11:30 a.m.; Hampden Academy versus Camden Hills, noon; Camden Hills versus Belfast, 12:30 p.m.; Mount View versus Boothbay Region, 1 p.m.; Belfast versus Hampden Academy, 1:30 p.m.; Camden Hills versus Mount View, 2 p.m.; Belfast versus Boothbay Region, 2:30 p.m.; Hampden Academy versus Mount View, 3 p.m.; Boothbay Region versus Camden Hills, 3:30 p.m.; and Boothbay versus Hampden Academy, 4 p.m.
