Hello Monroe!

The boys and I spent a recent weekend camping at Wilderness Edge Campground in Millinocket. While I wasn’t able to attempt summiting Katahdin with my father and other family members on this trip, we were thrilled for their success and happy hiking weather. Oliver and Nolan were content to play on the playground at the campground and splash in the cold Baxter State Park water at Ledge Falls.

Elwell orchard and gallery

The orchard and gallery of Ralph Elwell is set to reopen on Saturday, Sept. 3, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The business is located at 50 Elwell Road, off Back Brooks Road. The apples and pears are coming on!

Lots of new work is on display in the gallery, with a special focus on small work with the holidays in mind. Special sale pricing is in effect, with over 50 ready-to-hang small paintings currently on display. Included in the show are paintings by featured artists Alyce Wherren and Pamela Heddon.

Fall hours will be weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by calling 525-3130 for an appointment.

School starts

As the warm August days dwindle away, yellow buses will soon be back on the roads as school starts up again. The first day for all students at Monroe Elementary School, sixth graders at Mount View Middle School and freshmen at Mount View High School, is Tuesday, Aug. 30. Seventh and eighth graders, as well as 10th-12th graders, kick their year off at their respective schools on Wednesday, Aug. 31.

As a former public educator myself, having taught for two years at Monroe Elementary and eight years at Mount View Middle School, I wish all school staff and personnel a calm and focused start to the year!

Next Frozen Friday

Mark your calendar for Friday, Sept. 9, when Seek-No-Further Farmstead on Route 139 in Monroe will host its next public “Frozen Friday” ice cream event. Soft serve flavors vary with what’s in season, but always are made from the farm’s goat milk and other local ingredients.

Have a great week!
