BELFAST — The Waldo County YMCA has announced the first Mitch Philbrook Memorial Softball Tournament to be held Saturday, Sept. 10, at Walsh Field and Troy Howard Middle School Field.

The tournament honors Mitch Philbrook, a local athlete who helped Searsport District High School win two state championships in baseball. Mitch died in a motorcycle accident in June. Proceeds from the tournament will go to his family for funeral expenses, according to a press release from the Waldo County YMCA.

Proceeds in future years will establish a Mitch Philbrook Youth Sports Scholarship at the Waldo County YMCA to ensure that sports programs remain affordable and accessible to all children in Waldo County.

Sophie Pfander, sports director, said Philbrook’s death was “a huge loss to this community.”

“Since baseball was such a large part of his life, we plan to establish a scholarship fund in his name to help families pay for our baseball feeder programs,” she said in the press release.

Registration for the tournament is $250, 100% of which will go to the family this year. Registrations are due by Friday, Sept. 2. A minimum of eight teams and a maximum of 10 teams are required. Teams must have at least three male players and three female players.

The tournament will include a 50/50 raffle and a homerun derby. Winning team will be immortalized on a plaque at the YMCA.
