WALDO — On Wednesday, Aug. 31, 5-7 p.m. at the Waldo Town Hall, Route 131, meet and greet Republican candidates Rep. MaryAnne Kinney for Maine Senate, Todd Boisvert for sheriff, Ben Hymes for House District 38, and Dave Thompson for county commissioner. Refreshments. All are welcome.

Celebrate with Marsh River Co-op

BROOKS — The Marsh River Cooperative is having an 8th birthday celebration on Thursday, Sept. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. on the Co-op porch. There will be a kombucha tasting on tap from Aqua-vita Kombucha and a potluck dinner with birthday dessert provided by the Co-op. All are welcome.

Hike Newman Preserve

NORTHPORT — Join the Happy Wanderers at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Newman Preserve for an out and back hike totaling 2.2 miles of moderate hiking. From Route 1, turn onto Beech Hill Road in Northport. Follow it 3.8 miles, passing over a hill, to a small parking lot on the right. The trailhead is on the opposite side of the road from the parking lot.

The hike will be led by Coastal Mountains Land Trust and Journey to Health staff members. Go to to register.

Candidate meet & greet; Legion supper

BELFAST — Meet and greet GOP candidates Todd Boisvert (for sheriff), and David Thompson (county commissioner), Stephen J. Hemenway (House District 39), and Joe McLaughlin (House Distrit 40) at American Legion Post 43, 143 Church St., on Friday, Sept. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m.

While there, support Legion members by attending their usual Friday night supper (menu: spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread and Caesar salad). They will hold a meat raffle at 5:30 p.m.

Paddle the Passy

BELFAST — The Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition invites you to join a paddle up the Passagassawakeag River on Saturday, Sept. 10. Paddle your canoe or kayak up the river with the help of the rising tide, past an eagle nest to the Head of Tide. When the tide turns, let it take you back down to Belfast.  Meet trip guide Tom Murphy at the Belfast Boathouse at 10 a.m. Bring your boat, paddle, PFD, water, lunch, protection from rain, sun and wind. Free rabies clinic

TROY — There will be a free (for Waldo County residents) clinic for rabies shots on Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Troy Town Office from 9 to 11 a.m. Bring dogs on leashes, cats in carriers.

Memorial Poetry Reading

BELFAST —Belfast Free Library and the Office of the Belfast Poet Laureate present a Memorial Poetry Reading featuring poems by Montville poet Karie Friedman (1940-2017) in the library’s Abbott Room Sunday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. The event celebrates the life and influence of this poet who died suddenly five years ago.

Thorndike Days

THORNDIKE — Celebrate the town Saturday, Sept. 17, beginning with a parade at 10 a.m. that starts at the corner of East Thorndike Road and continues down through Gordon Hill Road. Also planned are vendors from all over, live music outside the Central Maine Auction Hall, children’s activities, and lots of food, including a Chicken Barbecue and Cal’s Food Truck.
