BELFAST — Dachshunds and the people who love them are invited to the 17th annual Maine Wienerfest Sunday, Sept. 11, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine, at Steamboat Landing Park on the waterfront.

Billed as “Northern New England’s Only Festival All About Wiener Dogs,” the popular event draws dachshund owners and admirers from all over Maine and beyond.

The Maine Wienerfest originated as an informal picnic and gathering for families who lived with doxies. Gradually, it grew to include other activities, with the number of dogs and dog lovers increasing each year.

Today, the rain or shine event is hosted by PAWS Animal Adoption Center, a nonprofit animal shelter serving the Midcoast for 48 years. Activities include a Grand Parade of Dachshunds, a Canine Costume Contest, a Doxie Distance Dash, a sales tent with Wienerfest items, raffle opportunities, a hotdog stand and the Village Soup Food Truck.
