BELFAST — The Belfast Soup Kitchen rolled out the red carpet on Wednesday, Sept. 7, as Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah visited the agency with members of the Maine CDC.

Shah and his entourage were in town to hear about the programming offered by the Belfast Soup Kitchen and to discuss public health issues with Waldo County Public Health Nurse Susan Dupler.

During his visit Shah noted that many of Maine’s soup kitchens and food banks are experiencing greater intake as a confluence of events (e.g., inflation, rising fuel and housing costs), create food insecurity for individuals and families for the first time.

Shah and CDC members were impressed as Belfast Soup Kitchen Director Cherie Merrill described the range and diversity of the Soup Kitchen’s programming.

“This place is amazing,” Shah said. “You have a lot going on.”
