CAMDEN – Nearly 100 fit, hardy and adventurous runners turned out to take on the challenge of racing across Camden Hills in the third annual Megunticook 50 and Wicked Tough 10, hosted by the Camden Hills State Park and One Community Many Voices, on Saturday, Sept. 10.

The Megunticook 50, or ultra, is not a course for the faint of heart. The 31-mile course broke down to two miles of pavement, eight miles of closed gravel road and 21 miles of single-track trails. The ultra covered the peaks of Battie, Bald Rock, Derry, Frohock, Cameron and Megunticook mountains, which gave runners a total elevation over the 31 miles of more than 7,600 feet.

Fyn Kynd of Searsmont was the first finisher for the ultra, with a time of five hours, 44 minutes and 21 seconds. Leslie O’Dell of Albany, N.H. was the first female finisher, fourth overall in 6:09:26.

Thirty-nine runners tackled the longer race. The cut off for finishers was 10 hours.

The Wicked Tough 10, a 10-kilometer, or 6.2-mile distance, also was no piece of cake. Despite its shorter distance from its ultra big brother, the course traversed a total elevation gain of 1,600 feet. It also covered two miles of pavement and four miles of single-track trails.

James Longo of Blue Hill was first overall in 55:40. Isabella Sharper of Orono was the first female finisher, eighth overall in 1:17:15.

Fifty runners took on the wicked tough run, which had no cutoff time.
