BELFAST — The Peace and Social Justice Forum/Waldo County, in collaboration with Rural Action Group Against Racism (RAGAR), shows the film “Voices from the Barrens: Native People, Blueberries and Sovereignty” Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library, 106 High St.

In “Voices,” filmmaker Nancy Ghertner documents the wild blueberry harvest of the Wabanaki Indigenous People from the United States and Canada as the tribes are challenged to balance blueberry hand raking traditions with the economics of the world market. This documentary was filmed from 2014 through 2019, released in 2020, and has been part of nine film festivals throughout New England.

Following the film, organizers will offer a link for people to attend an online panel discussion with REACH Wabanaki Wellness Coordinator Brian Altvater and filmmaker Nancy Ghertner the following evening, Thursday, Oct. 20, at 6:30 pm.
