BELFAST — It’s back.

Joy the duck has returned to Belfast Harbor for an encore. The 25-foot-high inflated yellow duck appeared late last week, lashed to a mooring off the town dock.

The “feathered” floater is adorned, simply, with the words “Greater JOY,” and first made an appearance in Belfast Harbor in August 2021.

The duck’s appearance in consecutive years might be due to a change in its nesting pattern. However, the duck’s gender is undetermined.

City leaders are stumped as to how the brazen bird found its current perch in the harbor.

“I truly do not know,” said Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce Director Dorothy Havey. “(It is) the best kept secret!”

For now, Joy floats contentedly in the North Atlantic with a message of hope that may best be described as “ducky.”
