NORTHPORT — Cleo H. “Papa” Alley, 84, passed away Oct. 14, 2022, surrounded by family at his residence in Northport. He was born to Calvin and Edna (Bagley) Alley on Nov. 19, 1937, in Islesford.

He attended school in Southwest Harbor, graduating from Pematic High School in 1955. Soon after, he joined the Coast Guard and in 1956 married Donna Beal. Cleo made the Coast Guard his career, spending many years away on ships, ice breakers, weather ships, high endurance cutter tugs and also was stationed in lighthouses. He served his country in Vietnam and later retired as an E9 masterchief. During his time in the service, he received many medals and awards.

After he retired from the Coast Guard, he was a heavy equipment mechanic and lobster fisherman until he eventually retired from the workforce altogether. In his later years he traveled winters to Arizona, Texas and Florida with good friends. Cleo was involved with friends and family playing music, which was always his love, no matter where he was. Cleo was a loving father and grandfather. Cleo and Donna very proudly brought up a grandson, Jared Alley, and enjoyed music with him. He was and still is a talented musician and a joy to us.

Cleo was predeceased by his sister Shirley Alley Archilles, brothers Carroll Alley and Kendall Alley, and daughter-in-law Hortense Alley.

He is survived by his loving wife Donna and children, David Alley, Kim Belmore and husband Cliff, Michael Alley and wife Anita, and Melissa Alley Varnum and husband Cody; brother Earl Alley and wife Christine; and his sister, Faye Geel and her husband Bill; along with many grandchildren and a great-grandchild who loved their Papa.

Services and a celebration of life will be held at a later date when warm weather returns. Memories and condolences may be shared at ripostafh.com.
