BELFAST — When George Siscoe, owner and founder of the Old Professor’s Bookshop, passed away in April of this year, many worried about what would become of the venerable bookseller’s store and legacy.

Craig Olson, a used and rare bookseller from Islesboro, has re-opened the space at 99 Main St. as Craig Olson Books. Olson has operated his original business Artisan Books and Bindery on Islesboro since 2003, and operated a bookshop in Belfast from 2011 to 2012.

Olson said, “I’ve known George Siscoe and Nancy Crooker my whole bookselling career. When George was thinking about opening a bookstore in his retirement years we had a lot of long conversations. I told him to sell what he loved. He did just that. I was always so impressed with his store and inventory.”

Olson opened the store in mid-September with the original inventory still intact. As he begins to sell down the original inventory, the makeup of the store will change. Olson will not be selling new books in science but will concentrate on used and rare books on a variety of subjects.

“In my past stores I always liked to maintain a general collection of material across all genres,” Olson said. “My inventory will also depend upon what I can buy. I will be very interested to see what I find along the Midcoast. I am always amazed at what wonderful material ‘walks in the door’ or I uncover during house visits.”

Olson is particularly interested in art, architecture, photography, design and the National Parks.

Craig Olson Books is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit, email or call 207-338-2006.
