BELFAST — The Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce recognized Belfast Public Heath Nurse Susan Dupler as its Citizen of the Year at the organization’s annual celebration and reception at the Hutchinson Center on Nov. 4.

“Susan Dupler holds a very special place in the hearts of so many people in this community,” said Belfast City Manager Erin Herbig. “For as long as I can remember, Susan has been there for folks who are really struggling and need support and services. Susan has always met that demand. She grew up in this community and understands what our residents need.”

The Citizen of the Year award was announced at the Nov. 4 celebration with a video tribute to Dupler. As her name appeared on the screen at the beginning of the video, the audience rose immediately to give Dupler a standing ovation.

“She is the most giving, selfless person I know,” said Belfast Soup Kitchen Director Cherie Merrill. “She helps people personally as well as professionally. She definitely has her finger on the pulse of this community.”

Dupler was lauded by community leaders for her willingness to meet people where they are and for her tireless efforts to improve the health and wellness of every member of the community.

Over 1,300 votes were cast for a handful of awards. The Chamber Appreciation Award, whose winner is selected by the Belfast Area Chamber board of directors, this year went to the chamber’s volunteer staff.

Other winners, announced earlier, were called up to receive their awards: The Grasshopper Shop, Business Growth Award; Rio’s Spiked Cafe, New Business Award; Penobscot Marine Museum, Waldo County Business Award; Belfast Soup Kitchen, Health Care Partners Award; and Rollie’s Bar & Grill, Hometown Heritage Award.
