BUCKSPORT — A kindergarten teacher at the G. H. Jewett School has been charged with assaulting a 5-year-old student, according to authorities.

Deputy Police Chief David Winchester said Christian Koelbl, 52, of Stockton Springs was charged with aggravated assault on Nov. 22. The alleged incident occurred on Oct. 20, Winchester said. A report was made to police on Nov. 21.

The child did not require medical treatment, the deputy chief said. Winchester explained that the charge of assault was classified as aggravated because of the child’s age.

“The circumstances of the incident fit that charge,” Winchester said.

Koelbl is free on bail and is scheduled to be in court in January.

Regional School Unit 25 Superintendent Jim Boothby said that the school district was informed about the charge on Nov. 22.

“I can confirm Mr. Koelbl has been on administrative leave from RSU 25 since Oct. 28, 2022,” Boothby said. “RSU 25 is cooperating fully with local law enforcement.

“Because Mr. Koelbl is an employee and this is a personnel matter, the district will follow the procedures as outlined in our collective bargaining agreement and as defined by Maine statute,” the superintendent said. “As always, the safety and well being of RSU 25 students remains our number one priority.”
