Holiday Festival

Because of last week’s rainy weather, the outdoor festival events are rescheduled for Saturday, Dec. 10, at 3 p.m. Participation is free; all ages are welcome. FMI: sscommunitybuilders@gmail.com. Undampened by the weather, indoor events with Santa, Mrs. Claus, elves, activities and refreshments drew a number of families to the Town Office Dec. 3.

Don’t forget that the Mount View Chamber Singers will perform their Carols in the Round on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. The concert is a perfect way to enjoy a pleasant Sunday evening during the Christmas season.

Town Office

The giving tree is now up in the office. Please bring an unwrapped toy to place under the tree for the children of the town who may be facing a difficult Christmas. Also please remember to donate to the Keep the Heat On Fund, as the weather has suddenly gotten much colder.

The Town Office will be closed on Monday, Dec. 26 for Christmas.

It was with great sadness that George Russell announced that his Grinch on top of the salt pile succumbed to the windstorm on the night of Nov. 30, but was saved the next day and is now back on the job.

Festival of Trees

The Searsport District High School senior class is presenting a Festival of Trees Saturday, Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. until noon. Companies and people who plan on donating trees should do so on Dec. 9 from 3 to 6 p.m. Tickets will be on sale and the winners will be announced Sunday evening and trees must be picked up that night as well.

On Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 10 a.m., students of the Elementary School will come by the Town Office to sing carols, so please come by to hear the music and see the children perform.

A big thank-you goes out to Boy Scout Robert Walker, who as part of his Eagle Scout project, built outdoor furniture at Peterson Park, at the end of Middle Street in town. He was aided by his family and friends. There is a new picnic table and bench to enjoy, the park should get a lot more use with a place to have a picnic or just savor the view.

According to Town manager Mac Smith’s newsletter, starting on Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and then on the third Tuesday of each month afterward, Veteran Service officers from the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services will be at the Waldo Community Center in Belfast. The center is located at 18 Merriam Road. For more information, or to schedule a private appointment, please contact the center’s reception desk at 930-8084 or in person.

The Sandy Point Community Church will hold a Special Music Sunday on Dec. 18 at 9:30 a.m. The Sunday School will sing several songs, musicians will play and additional singers will sing Christmas music. Also, don’t forget that there will be Christmas caroling for homebound neighbors starting at 1 p.m. in the church parking lot on Sunday, Dec. 11.

Just Barb’s is now closed for the season until the beginning of March. Shute’s is taking orders for scallops and there is a phone number at the shop to call to get on their list. The Wreaths Across America convoy to Arlington National Cemetery will be passing through Stockton on Sunday, Dec. 11, sometime in the late morning.

The town tree is now lit. The Christmas light display is glowing on Cape Jellison Road, and when I drove by the other day, a flock of turkeys was in the yard, checking it all out. No snow on the ground yet but lots of wind and rain. Everyone is busy now with the holidays approaching quickly.

I was at my friend Cathy Hardy’s the other night to drink some wine, eat dessert and to watch the movie “Love Actually,” which is a Christmas favorite. It’s important to stop and enjoy a time of peace and serenity every once in awhile.

Thought for the week: “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” — William Arthur Ward.
