Exciting news for “Owen” the opossum fans; “Owen” was recently seen rummaging around my backyard! I hadn’t seen him for several weeks, so when I turned on my deck light and saw him nibbling the Thanksgiving leftovers, it made me happy.

The new streetlight by Unity House of Pizza has been approved and Central Maine Power Co. will be installing a new LED light to enhance pedestrian safety.

The second annual Unity “Get Lit!” competition, sponsored by the Town Office, started Dec. 1 and runs through Dec. 18. Like last year, decorate your house for Christmas and post the picture to the CommUnity OpportUnity Facebook page and you’ll be entered into a drawing for one of three $50 gift certificates from local businesses: Amish Community Market, Unity Flower Shop, and Unity Shop ‘n’ Save. Unity residents only. If you’re not on Facebook, you can have a friend or neighbor post it for you. Winners will be drawn at the Dec. 20 Select Board meeting.

Sunday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. It is now Christmas tree hunting season in Waldo County, and the Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad can take you to the Christmas trees! Climb aboard for a 12 mile (round trip) from Unity and travel “over the river and through the woods” on its way to the MOFGA station where you will find an assortment of Christmas trees to choose from. Santa Claus will accompany the train, and hot cocoa and cookies will be served! Once you reach the MOFGA station, Santa will listen to kids’ wishes, and present a special gift! Volunteers will load your chosen tree onto the train. Fare includes refreshment, snacks, and the Christmas tree.

Thank you, Ken Murch, for the donation of a beautiful granite bench to be used at the Unity Public Library. The inscription reads: “To our teachers ‘Planting the seeds of knowledge.’ ” There’s an online auction to benefit the Unity Public Library through Dec. 20. Over 140 great items are up for bid and more are being added every day. Visit biddingowl.com/UnityPublicLibrary. The library winter hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and Tuesday hours will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Shop ’til you drop! Unity has lots of places for you to find gifts for those you love: Unity Pond Pottery (20% off every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.), Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm store, Chase Toys (ATVs, snowmobiles, accessories, winter gear, etc.), Holler Soap, Unity Flower Shop, Mac’s Hardware, the Amish Community Market and more! How about a gift certificate for eating out at Mammie’s Restaurant, Unity House of Pizza, Dunkin’ Donuts, Subway, or China Jade? Do they like wine? Stone Tree Cidery. Also, Hair Flair, Town and Country Salon, and Blushing Moon Salon would be welcome for a special treat. For the practical person, maybe a gift card to Unity Shop ‘n’ Save, Family Dollar or the Depot Store.

Don’t forget the Toys for Tots box at the Town Office! New unwrapped toys only. Boxes are also located at Bangor Savings Bank and Unity Shop ‘n’ Save. I understand there is also an “angel tree” at Mount View High School.
