The high school basketball season tipped off for a handful of local schools Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9-10, which saw the Belfast girls collect an early-season victory over Bucksport.

The Lions roared to a 35-18 win over the Golden Bucks Friday, while both Mount View teams were downed by visiting Ellsworth Saturday.

The action continued Monday, Dec. 12 as the Lion boys dropped a 70-42 decision to visiting Bucksport.

Searsport and Islesboro were slated to play Saturday, but those games were postponed to Jan. 28.

Girls

Belfast 35, Bucksport 18

At Belfast Dec. 9, the Lions pulled away from the Golden Bucks in the second half and emerged with a 17-point win. Belfast led 5-2, 15-7 and 26-10 at the quarter breaks.

Maddie Deans netted nine points for the winners, while Danica Gray added seven; Julie Darres, five; Audri Goodwin and Madi Goodwin, four; and Halle Tripp and Peyton Wadsworth, three.

Addison Goss led Bucksport with eight points, while Mercedes Taungatua added five; Makayla Miller, three; and Sara Cyr, two.

The Lions were 2-of-5 (40 percent) from the foul line, while the Golden Bucks were 1-of-7 (14 percent).

Ellsworth 89, Mount View 16

At Thorndike Dec. 10, the Eagles soared to a lopsided victory over the host Mustangs. Ellsworth led 27-2, 55-6 and 79-9 at the quarter breaks.

Arianna Bradeen and Olivia Kirby led Mount View with four points each, while Bella Serrano, Emily Richards, Jazlynn Totman and Savannah Lorenz each added two.

Elise Sargent, Morgan Clifford and Liz Boles each scored 12 points to pace Ellsworth, while Grace Jaffrey added 11; Addison Atherton, 10; Megan Jordan, nine; Abby Radel, eight; Aaliyah Manning, seven; Lily Bean, four; and Kaylee Bagley and Savannah Edgecomb, two.

The Mustangs were 4-of-13 (31 percent) from the foul line, while the Eagles were 9-of-23 (39 percent).

Boys

Bucksport 70, Belfast 42

At Belfast Dec. 12, the Golden Bucks pulled away in the second half and bested the host Lions. Bucksport led 17-14, 31-21 and 54-26 at the quarter breaks.

Caden Blackwood tossed in 25 points for the winners, while Colin McDougal added 14; Evan Donnell, 12; Kamryn Webber, 11; and Jake Williams, eight.

K.J. Payson led Belfast with 15 points, while Zeke Slaughter tallied 12; James Ritter, six; Jeremiah Porter, five; and Eli Slaughter, four.

The Golden Bucks did not attempt a free throw, while the Lions were 4-of-7 (57 percent) from the charity stripe.

Ellsworth 78, Mount View 61

At Thorndike Dec. 10, the Mustangs could not ground the high-flying Eagles and dropped their season opener by double digits. Ellsworth led 24-17, 41-36 and 61-45 at the quarter breaks.

Wyatt Evensen led Mount View with 21 points, while Max Bottenfield added 12; Tyler Russell and Noah Hurd, 11; Ben Osborne, four; and Nick Cobb and Collin Jones, one.

Chance Mercier pumped in 36 points to lead Ellsworth, while Eamon MacDonald tallied 10; Kyle Kenny, nine; Peter Keblinsky, seven; Miles Palmer, five; Michael Harris, four; Josiah James-Chinn, three; and Cruz Coffin and Dawson Curtis, two.

The Mustangs were 15-of-27 (56 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Eagles were 12-of-19 (63 percent).
