BELFAST — Maine Stay Media has named Jim Leonard editor of The Republican Journal. He succeeds William Carroll, who resigned to pursue other opportunities.

Leonard has served as a reporter for The Journal since June, covering town news, primarily in Lincolnville, and features throughout Waldo County. He previously worked for Courier Publications and Village Soup Media from 2001 to 2007, covering news, features and sports.

“It’s an honor to be offered this position at the oldest newspaper in Maine,” Leonard said. “My hope is that we provide the news coverage that best informs Waldo County.”

His return to journalism in June followed a 15-year career as athletic director at Rockland District High School, Oceanside High School and Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

A Rockland native, Leonard graduated from the University of Maine and attended UMaine School of Law. He also worked as marketing director of the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce, and spent 13 years as a career firefighter.
