The Zoo is coming to Carver Memorial Library! The Instrument Petting Zoo, that is. On Saturday, Jan. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m., the instruments will be let out of their cases for a fun musical experience for all ages. The Zoo gives everyone a chance to try out a musical instrument they may have never played, but always wanted to try. No experience is needed. Come and explore the various instruments we have available for loan.

The afternoon is co-hosted with Carver Library by the Searsport Shores Jam Ensemble which is entering its 30th year of bringing musicians together. Players from the group will play a few songs and help put instruments in the hands of others.

The library partners with the Makers Guild of Maine Musical Instrument Lending Program for anyone to learn or try out a new instrument. The instruments have been donated by local musicians and community members through Guild fundraisers and outreach. They are free to borrow. All you need is a local library card. Available are acoustic and electric guitars (with amp), violins, banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, an upright bass and an accordion.

Snow date is Jan. 28.

Storytime theme for Friday, Jan. 20 (at 10:30 a.m.) is rabbits.

Library reminders: The Douglas Coffin political cartoon exhibit runs through February. The 100 hours Outdoors program is still giving out logbooks to earn a raffle ticket for a prize.

Ice skating

The skating rink in Mosman Park is almost ready! The Recreation Department has done a fabulous job constructing the rink over the basketball court with benches on the sides to put on skates. It is next to the gazebo with picnic benches for those who want to watch and drink cocoa. All we need now is some good, cold weather!
