BELFAST — Belfast Senior College’s winter semester, welcoming student participants ages 50 and older, begins Thursday, Jan. 19.

The semester’s 12 courses range from photography, watercoloring and making a glass mosaic to play reading, Henry VIII, tabletop travel, contract bridge and “Getting to Know your iPhone.” Other courses will discuss “Living in a World of Toxic Chemicals, “Nature, Art and Mathematics,” and a free one-session course on ridding your property of ticks.

“We think there’s something for everyone this semester,” Senior College spokesman Richard Koralek said in a press release. “Belfast Senior College begins its third decade with a fascinating array of morning and afternoon classes in January and February that will be convenient and interesting, dealing with subjects that are sure to appeal to everyone.”

Four courses begin Thursday, Jan. 19 at 9:30 a.m. Five more begin Thursday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. One course starts on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m., and another on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. The free “Brown Bag” course on tick control is offered Thursday, Jan. 19 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., by Art Shea of Brooks.

The semester’s instructors include biomedical expert Dr. Barry Timms, artist Nancy Blatz, photographers Paul Sheridan and Jim Kosinski, glass artist Monica Morris, mathematician Cyrene Slegona, contract bridge expert Carol Gator, iPhone guru and veteran Senior College instructor Wendy Kasten, Beth Whitman and Tom Maycock of the Belfast Maskers, Tudor enthusiast and Senior College Curriculum Chair Karen Gleeson, and veteran traveler Nancy Perkins assisted by Marcie Porter, Steve and Mayo Bulloch, Arlin Larson and Elizabeth Sterner.

“We are very excited about this winter semester,” said Nancy Perkins, president of Senior College’s board of trustees. “Senior College provides stimulation, knowledge, social interaction and fun for people age 50 and up. Members’ spouses and partners of any age also welcome to become members, membership and course fees are low on purpose and scholarships are available.” Online membership and class registration are available at belfastseniorcollege.org.

Belfast Senior College registration, required for all courses, is $25 and is valid through August. Course fees are $27 except for the free “Brown Bag” course and all weekly courses will be held at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast and will last five weeks except for the four-session Glass Mosaic instruction. University of Maine Hutchinson Center provides Zoom services for Senior College, which is an independent all-volunteer non-profit organization. After the end of the winter term, the spring semester begins in April, the summer semester takes place in June, July and August, and the fall semester begins in September.
