Ta Da! I finished my temperature blanket! It’s an odd sensation to look at it and realize that I knit almost every single day of 2022. It’s fascinating to see those colors and know that they represent the range and progression of temps — taken in the shade of my back deck — for a whole year. Interestingly, it never hit 100, nor did it drop below 0 degrees. Any knitters out there? I plan to write up simple pattern instructions; reach out if you’d like them.

I know you don’t really want to hear this, but the COVID is still swirling around us. I know three people personally who got it this week, in Waldo County. Be vigilant.

New business in town

Really big news from the tattooed dad himself! Many of you knew that Cody Tibbetts started learning how to do tattoos during the COVID years. As of today, he is Maine’s newest licensed tattoo artist. His studio space is located at 894 Moosehead Trail, Jackson, the same property as the (Tattoed Dad) brewery. If you are interested in getting a tattoo, please feel free to contact him directly at 505-0006.

Tattooed Dad

Update from Tattooed Dad Brewing Co.: In February we will be open the 10th-12th, with a potluck and Jaded Ravins playing that Saturday. We will start our loose leaf tea service, Mama’s Tea House. Our made-to-order masala chai tea will be on the menu. And cheese plates! We introduce food to our menu. We are excited for this expansion, and hope our customers will be, too.

Town Office

The next Select Board meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 7, 6:30 p.m. at the Town Office. If you don’t want to see your name in print — in the Town Report — you’ll want to get your taxes paid up by Jan. 31.

Appeal for Appeals!

The Town of Jackson is in need of an Appeals Board. This is a five-member board appointed by the Select Board. It meets a minimum of once each year, and other than that only when needed to review requests for any variances requested on the existing land use ordinances. Despite these minimal requirements, we need to have the Appeals Board in place in the event any resident would like to request a variance to any ordinance. Appeals Board members should be familiar with the Jackson Land Use Ordinance, and have an interest in how future development will impact our town. Please come to our next Planning Board meeting, Tuesday evening, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m. if interested in learning more about the process.

Happy Chinese New Year! This holiday falls on the second New Moon following the winter solstice. Each new Chinese year is represented through a series of animals and 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. People born in 2023, and the previous Rabbit years (2023, 2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951, 1939, 1927) are believed to be vigilant, witty, quick-minded and ingenious.

As I submitted the above, imagining giant red paper dragons with dancers leaping beneath them, I was deeply saddened to learn of yet one more tragic mass shooting during Chinese Lunar New Year’s Eve celebrations in Los Angeles County. My sympathy to all those suffering loss and injury.
