Happy Groundhog Day! So, if things seem like they are repeating themselves — well, maybe, as storm follows storm — but at this point, spring seems to be in striking distance, no matter what the groundhog says! Here’s what’s going on in Searsport in the near future.
At Carver Memorial Library
On Thursday, Feb. 2, 2:30 to 4 p.m., there will be a workshop to construct Valentines, greeting cards and pop-up cards. For all ages, children and adults. Drop in and join in!
On Friday, Feb. 3 at 10:30 a.m., there will be a special storytime. It’s “Take Your Child to the Library Day” and a special program to read 1,000 books before kindergarten will be launched!
Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. to discuss The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich. The club is currently meeting at the library Reading Room. All are welcome; come to discuss or just listen in!
At Penobscot Marine Museum
On Thursday night, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. on Zoom the Fog and Ice Speaker Series resumes with meteorologist Mike Clair discussing “Fog Along the Maine Coast.” As Maine is one of the foggiest states in the country, he will explain how its unique geography and local water temperatures combine to make this happen. The talk is free, but a suggested donation of $5 is requested. To register, visit penobscotmarinemuseum.org/events-list or contact Jeana Ganskop at 548-2529.
Next Thursday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. the program will feature PMM photo archivist Kevin Johnson.
There will be a Sailor’ Valentine Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2 Church St. Participants will make their own Sailors’ Valentine, inspired by the shell art made by sailors at sea. Sailors brought them home as gifts to their wives, girlfriends, mothers or sisters. They were mostly made in the West Indies between 1830 and 1880. The cost is $40 and all materials are included. Again, contact Jeana Ganskop for more information and to register at 548-2529.
Chocolate and Fuel Fund
First Congregational Church is having a virtual Chocolate Fest around Feb. 14. You need to imagine some creamy, delicious chocolate Valentine goodie as you send a donation to support the Interfaith Fuel Fund during this expensive, cold winter! Send your donation to: First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 261, Searsport, ME 04974 and help keep someone a little warmer! Please note ”Fuel Fund” on your check’s memo line.
Rewrap window inserts
Speaking of warmth, if you have been enjoying the inserts made by the Waldo County Window Dressers, you may have experienced some damage to the plastic from pets and/or storage. You can get on the list for rewrapping at a nominal cost (about $15) for the fall of 2023. Visit belfastwindowinserts@gmail.com to get more information.
Rabbie Burns’ birthday celebration
And finally, I wanted to mention Robert Burns, considered to be the national poet of Scotland and who has a widely celebrated birthday each Jan. 25. Rio’s Spiked Café had a special celebration that night. Russell Manton, who was born in Scotland, invited the Dunlop Highlanders bagpipe and drums to perform. Their kilts and music made for a festive event. Russell came to the U.S. when he was 27.
Robert Burns is credited with penning the words to “Auld Lang Syne” and it is said that Bob Dylan used some of his words for his music. By the way, did you know that Maine has its own clan tartan? Next year I will remind everyone of the event.
On that note, have a good winter week!
