Musings on God
We canines don’t often think, write or bark about God and religion. We especially avoid religion since we’ve seen how destructive disagreements over it can be. Some of you humans even fight wars about it and judge others because of it. That doesn’t seem good to me since I think that people are entitled to believe what they want, as long as they don’t hurt anyone. We dogs know this already and so don’t fight over …

A feral cat named Oscar
Although the pandemic situation has improved, I’ve been sticking close to home. And surprisingly, sticking close to home has not been boring. It’s really been exciting since we now have a feral cat living in our yard! My human first discovered him several months ago when I chased him late at night. It was 9 p.m. and a pitch dark, frigid January evening. I spotted something moving around the garbage cans. It was a …

Benny’s top ten New Year’s resolutions
Happy New Year everyone! We all have been eagerly awaiting 2021, even us dogs. It’s time to be hopeful and believe that at some point in the new year that we can put this virus behind us. It’s been difficult to see our humans upset about having to stay home and wear white cloth muzzles when they go out. Also, the holidays were kind of sad since we didn’t have the usual merriment with friends and family. Our …

A new chapter for us
When this pandemic first started earlier in the year, I didn’t think it was a big deal. While it brought some marked changes for me and a lot of dogs, most of the changes were positive. My human was home all of the time; she took me for more walks; and she seemed to crave my companionship more than ever. Well, those changes didn’t seem to be short-lived and have continued on for months now. It’s OK, but it’s also …

A little help from your human
Hello everyone. This is Liz, Benny’s human. I’m stepping in to help Benny with his column this week. You see, Benny and our little family has had a very rough week and Benny’s feeling pretty blue. He’s always so good about helping me out and so I decided that I should help him out. The past few days have been very difficult to say the least. Just a few days ago, one of Benny’s dearest friends (and mine,) had to …

Sometimes you have to say goodbye
My human has been sad as of late because her companion of 17 years (a full decade before I made the scene) is slipping away. It’s her senior cat, whom she found dumped in the woods with his litter-mates many years ago. It was winter and she saw four little puffs of black fur scatter in different directions in the woods. They had been abandoned there in a cardboard box which lay nearby. So, she, with the help of …

The Dreaded Bath
If you read the headline of this column, I think you’ll know where I’m going with this. I absolutely dread baths! What purpose do they serve? I’m just going to get dirty and stinky again in a matter of days. I’m a dog and I’m supposed to smell like a dog. Or even better, smell like that dead animal scent and deer poop that I rolled in this morning. It’s pure heaven to roll in the grass, soaking up every last …

Don’t wait. Please say it today!
Back before I was born, my human had a rescue dog named Spanky. Spanky was a German Shepherd and Anatolian mix, who weighed-in at about 135 pounds. No, he wasn’t fat. He was large and lean. He was a lightning-fast runner and swimmer; an athletic big boy who was my human’s beloved companion. I often think that I’ll never measure up to Spanky since I’m half the size he was, but I’m OK with that. We dogs don’t …

If you only had a tail!
Right now, you humans are under an unprecedented amount of stress. I hear the news reports when my human has the radio on. I’ve learned this pandemic has resulted in the loss of life, jobs, and income and is affecting everyone in profound ways. It makes me sad, but I know that you humans are a resilient bunch. I see that there is still joy, there is still laughter, and there is still love among you. That’s great …

We are the lucky ones!
If you’re like my human, then you could also be feeling the stress of this pandemic. I know she doesn’t like wearing that face- covering muzzle when she’s out and having to constantly wash her hands. She also doesn’t see her friends as much and when they do get together, they keep a safe distance from each other and don’t hug. She even confided in me that it’s very sad and scary and that she’s never experienced …
