    Best friends worry with you

Wow, 2020 has sure gotten off to a rocky start! I’m a dog, so you may ask how I know this. Well, my human has told me all about it. I’m sure that I’ve mentioned before how much she talks to me. She talks about everything really, and although I never answer back, she still goes on! I think that’s what best friends are for. She was explaining that she’s really worried about some things: the climate crisis, the …

    What’s the point?

My human and I were talking about words the other day. You know, words as in what you humans use to communicate with one another. I wish that I had a huge vocabulary to use like you do. While I do understand quite a bit, I’d really like to understand even more of what is spoken. Instead, I’ve got to rely on non-verbal communication, since that’s easiest for me and is directly related to what is going on in my …

    A year-end thank you!

Wow, it’s the end of 2019, and there’s a fresh new beginning for all of us with the arrival of 2020! How exciting! I am betting that 2020 is going to be a good year for you and me, and I’ve made some New Year’s resolutions to help ensure that. I’m looking forward to getting started on them, but before I do, I wanted to shout out some extra thanks to some special people out there. We dogs are a grateful species as …

The holidays and a special Christmas wish

I’m a Christian pup and for me, the holidays mean a Christmas celebration. For my Jewish pals, the holidays mean a Hanukkah celebration. So, rather than get any anyone’s snout out of joint (which is particularly devastating in the canine world,) I’m going to woof about a holiday state of mind so that everyone’s included. You see, for us dogs, “the holidays” is more of an ongoing attitude that we have all year, …

Being a dog, I don’t spend time in dark places. Well, actually that’s not technically true. Let me be more specific. Every now and then, my human will take me and my dog sister, Ilsa, out for a walk after supper, and it’s dark. We walk outside through the darkness and then head home. But those aren’t the kind of dark places that I’m referring to. What I mean specifically are the dark places that some humans go to …

    A Bow-Wow Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is in a few days, and for this pup, it’s always a happy day. My human has the day off as do her human friends. So hopefully, we’ll have some company in the house, which I love. I’ll prance around carrying my favorite toy, wiggle my butt, and receive lots of pets and proclamations of love. “Oh Benny, you are so cute!” “Oh Benny, I just love you!” “Oh Benny, look at your glorious brown and tan spots!” …

    Happy Gotcha' Day!

Have you ever heard of “Gotcha’ Day?” It’s a term that was coined in 2005 to commemorate the day that someone joins a family through adoption. It’s been described as an important step to help demystify the adoption process, tell the story of a person’s arrival, and include them in the family legend. It’s a day of festive celebration; just the same as birthdays and annual holidays are. My personal Gotcha’ Day is …

    The photographs never taken

I don’t know how you feel about photographs, but if you’re like my human, you have a lot of them. Even so, I bet there are some photos that you don’t have and wish you did. Maybe of a time in your life with someone, or someplace special that will never happen again? I know there are photos that my human wishes she had. And because of this, she went ahead and signed us up for a “photo shoot” of sorts. It seems …

    They say it's my birthday!

I’ve been hearing a lot of “happy birthday’s” this week. Yup, my human says “Happy birthday, Benny, you precious boy! I cannot believe that you’re already 6 years old!” I don’t really know what that means exactly, or why she’s saying that now, but I like it. I love the extra attention and It feels like it’s my special day somehow. My sister, Ilsa, has not said anything, nor acted any different, so I’m not sure if …

    A therapy dog speaks out

I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned that I’m a certified therapy dog. I’m a pup of many talents and beyond writing this column, I do therapy. It all started a few years ago. My human likes to volunteer and help people, so she took me and my German Shepherd “sister,” Ilsa, to get trained. We took classes every week and learned how to be calm around all types of people, around wheelchairs and crutches, and on various …
