I saw a cute meme on Facebook the other day; people were in the produce section of a grocery store and everyone was wearing masks and they couldn’t lick their fingers to open up the little plastic bags that you would put produce in. It was reminiscent of my conversation with Marie Alexander a few days prior. I saw her struggling to open the bag, and I walked up to her and said “You really want to lick your …

I’m excited for the Daytona 500 running Feb. 14. I prefer local short track racing, but NASCAR will do in a pinch. I met my husband at Unity Raceway and we were married on the start/finish there. You can check out some vintage and fairly recent pictures and videos on the “Unity Raceway Photos and Memories” Facebook page. Well then, looks like winter 2021 has decided to come after all. As I speak, my husband and …

penny@unityme.org Finding unity in Unity. I had the opportunity, along with Pat Clark and our local House Rep. MaryAnne Kinney, to make guest appearances on a special Don Carrigan segment for Newscenter. Basically it was about moving forward under the new administration and finding a sense of togetherness and community. I’m hopeful we can. “Amelia” (our Town Office mascot) assisted me in my interview; she’s very …

penny@unityme.org I finally had my Christmas gift exchange with my cousin Cassie. It had been awhile since I had seen her as she’s been busy with her Thomas School of Dance in Bangor and her recent wedding to Erick Whitt. She brought me a large beautiful bowl with some paper whites and grow material; the bulbs have taken off and soon enough I’ll have fresh flowers in the house. Chase Toys recently spent some time …

penny@unityme.org It seems to be that time of the year when not much is happening. There’s very little snow for the snowmobilers around here. My husband has been looking at snowmobile reports from various parts of the state. Larry King’s report of ice thickness doesn’t sound very promising at this point, but it looks a bit better over the coming weeks. I’ve seen reports of snowshoes being nearly sold out, but …

penny@unityme.org It seems that when I prepare for a storm I do not lose power; when I am ill-prepared, without fail, I lose power. We saw a large blue flash fill the sky and most of the town went dark. I do have a generator, but since it was relatively warm out we did not hook it up. We went to bed and hoped for the best. I had charged my cellphone, so I was able to see the extent of the power outages. The kind …

penny@unityme.org My husband and I had a lobster dinner this past week: it’s a once-a-year treat. I think the best part is the melted butter. Unity Shop ‘n’ Save had them all cooked up for us. Me? I’d still rather have a steak. I went to The Good Steward Thrift Shop today to get some more children’s books for Aubri & Riley’s Little Free Library at the Town Office. The thrift store also has a great selection of …

penny@unityme.org I came across some 1980s annual town reports in the office this week. For me they are fun to read and see what has changed just in the last 30-odd years. I suppose it’s all relevant to the times, but wouldn’t it be nice if our monthly payment to Regional School Unit 3 were still $18,000/month instead of $117,000/month? Technology has changed and there are new laws, demands and mandates that …

penny@unityme.org I was speaking with my sister Patti the other day. Her youngest daughter, Nadia, loves all things horses and bison. Patti had just bought her some Breyer horses along with a stable. Nadia wanted to know what “barrel racing” was. I told Patti to Google it and show her some videos. Then I got sucked into watching barrel racing videos for half an hour! Back in the day I used to run the barrels with …

penny@unityme.org Saturday, the 25th of January, will mark the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rat. The Zodiacal Rat is the first of the repeating 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac and calendar. Recent Rat years are: 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2008. When I went for lunch at the China Jade earlier in the week, Joyce presented me with some big juicy oranges. In Chinese culture …
