Sailors’ valentine workshop at Penobscot Marine Museum

SEARSPORT — On Saturday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Penobscot Marine Museum holds a sailors’ valentine workshop. Participants will make their own sailors’ valentine inspired by the shell art made by sailors. All materials are included. The cost of the workshop is $40, and will be held at 2 Church St.

Sailors’ valentines are a form of sea shell art, popular in the 1800s, when sailors brought them home to their wives, girlfriends, mothers or sisters. Most sailors’ valentines were made in the West Indies on the island of Barbados between 1830 and 1880, but production continued into the early 20th century.
