LINCOLNVILLE BEACH — The 13th annual Dip 4 Derek is scheduled to take place at noon Jan. 1 at Lincolnville Beach.

Each year on New Year's Day, hardy souls take the plunge into Penobscot Bay to benefit Derek O'Brien, who suffered a spinal injury in a 2005 swimming accident.

Derek will be on site to personally support and thank everyone who takes a dip, as well as their support team.

Peter Roper, who organizes the fundraiser, said he looks forward to seeing lots of first-time dippers this year. Over the past 13 years, the record for the youngest dipper is age 5 and for the oldest dipper is age 81.

Roper urged anyone who dares to take the plunge, and challenge a friend to join in.

Donations can be made in advance to the Derek O'Brien Trust, and mailed to Peter Roper, 10 Spring St., Camden, ME 04843. Checks and cash will be accepted at the Dip.

For more information, call Roper at 236-0074.
