Midcoast 14s earn state berth with district runner-up finish

Augusta cements district crown, will host state tournament on July 14

Thomaston — The Midcoast Babe Ruth 14-year-old baseball tournament team won one of three District 2 games in recent days and that was enough to earn the local teenagers a spot in the state event, which begins on Friday, July 14 in Augusta.

Augusta won the three-day, three-team, double-elimination district tournament in games played Friday through Sunday, July 7-9, on the Oceanside High School field.

Midcoast finished second, with a win over Apple Valley and a pair of losses to Augusta.

Augusta finished 3-0, Midcoast 1-2 and Apple Valley 0-2 in the district tourney. As the host team, Augusta earns a spot in the state tournament, while Midcoast also will represent District 2.

Team members for Midcoast include True Crane, Joel Pitcher, Aiden Schecter, Nate Coombs, Joey Curtis, Brandon Cournoyer, Clayton Belcher, Obie Miller, Tim Farrelly, Sam Moody, Jonah Carlson, Ethan Reed, Adam Sirois, Dylan Abbott and Jason Greenleaf. The team is managed by Brian Secord and coached by Tim Moody and Matthew Shields.

Sunday's championship proved a competitive battle as Augusta squeezed out a 2-1 victory, as it made the most of two unearned runs in the first inning. Midcoast tallied its run in the second.

Midcoast pitcher Crane (no earned runs on 3 hits, no walks, 11 strikeouts in 6 innings) finished as the tough-luck loser.

Alia Warren (earned run on 4 hits, walk, hit batter, 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings) and Bobby Stolt (walk, strikeout in 1/3 inning) worked the hill for Augusta.

Kyle Douin finished with a single, double, run and stolen base for Augusta, while Curtis (2 singles steal), Reed (single, run) and Farrelly (RBI) paced Midcoast.

On Saturday, Midcoast bested Apple Valley 9-4, as it scored four runs in the second inning, three in the fourth and one in the sixth and seventh. Apple Valley tallied two in the second and one in the fifth and seventh.

Midcoast's repeat hitters were Crane (single, double, run, 3 RBIs) and Abbott (3 runs, double).

For Apple Valley, Gavin Perkins (2 singles), Henry Nuce (single, double, run, RBI) and Hunter Cannery (2 singles, run, RBI) led the charge.

Sirois (3 runs on 5 hits, 3 walks, 6 strikeouts in 5 innings) and Crane (run on hit, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts in 2 innings) pitched for Midcoast, while Ryan Baird (7 runs on 3 hits, 7 walks, 6 strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings) and Owen Foster (2 runs on 4 hits, walk, 3 strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings) worked the bump for Apple Valley.

Also on Saturday, Midcoast opened the tourney with an 8-0 loss to Augusta. Augusta plated three runs in the first inning, one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth and seventh.

Crane, Curtis and Reed had singles for Midcoast.

Keying Augusta's offense were Nick Barber (single, double, 2 RBIs, run), Riley Guyer (2 singles, 2 runs) and Guy Ahern (2 singles, run, RBI).

Pitchers were Midcoast were Curtis (4 runs on 4 hits, 6 walks, hit batter, strikeout in 3 innings), Farrelly (3 runs on 5 hits, strikeout 1.1 innings), Schecter (no runs on hit, walk, strikeout in 1 2/3 innings) and Reed (run on no hits, 2 walks in an inning).

Working the hill for Augusta were Kevin Douin (no runs on hit, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts in 2 innings), Bobby Stolt (no runs, no hits, walk, 4 strikeouts in 2 innings), Riley Guyer (no runs on hit, no walks, 4 strikeouts in 2 innings) and Akeerah Warren (no runs on hit, walk in 1 inning).

On Friday, Augusta opened the tournament with a 15-1, 5-inning win over Apple Valley. Augusta scored five runs in the first inning, two in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth. Apple Valley tallied its lone run in the first.

Augusta was paced offensively by Kyle Douin (2 singles, double, 4 runs, RBI), Nick Barber (2 singles, run, RBI, 2 stolen bases) and Riley Geyer (single, double, 3 RBIs, run).

Augusta's pitchers were Logan Dupont (run on hit, 2 walks, strikeout in an inning), Bob Stolt (no run on no hit, 8 strikeouts in 3 innings) and Luke Anderson (no runs on no hits, 2 strikeouts in an inning).

For Apple Valley, Isaah Burden (7 runs on 3 hits, 6 walks, 2 strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings) and Gavin Perkins (8 runs on 6 hits, 5 walks, strikeout in 2 1/3 inning) worked the bump.
