Prospect — Several people remain in the hospital following a single-vehicle crash Sept. 23 on Route 1 near Penobscot Narrows Bridge.

Police said a 2006 Mercedes was traveling west on Route 1 at 12:45 a.m. when the driver, Michael Soteres, 20, of Bucksport failed to round a left sweeping turn. The Mercedes sustained significant front-end damage.

Four passengers — 18-year-old Joshua Larrabee of Prospect; Joseph French, 20, of Ellsworth; Everett Dalton, 20, of Bucksport; and Zachary Turcotte, 18, of Winterport — were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

After being cleared medically, French was arrested on a probation violation, police said.

Although police say most of the injuries are considered serious, exact details are not known at this time. Two people were taken to the hospital by Lifeflight and two by ambulance, according to police.

The crash is still under investigation and alcohol and speed are considered factors in the incident. Police say more criminal charges could be filed as the investigation continues. This marks the second serious personal injury crash in that area in recent weeks.

Waldo County Sheriff's Cpl. Greg Jones is the lead investigator. He was assisted at the crash scene by Deputy Jeffery Rice, Penobscot Sheriff's Office, Stockton Springs Ambulance and Fire, Searsport Ambulance and Bucksport Ambulance.

Apparently the tourist lights on the bridge aren't enough. Maybe we need to light up the mountain as well.
