Waldo Town Clerk Sandra Smith announces that the Town Office will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 15.

Sandra, as part of her job, is required to participate in various training events and unfortunately, these most often fall on Tuesdays or Thursdays, days when the Waldo Town Office is open. It’s just the way the ball bounces, though, and Sandra has no control over dates of these sessions.

This particular workshop, Sandra says, is all about vital statistics and the new array of laws, rules and regulations regarding vital statistics.

Summer complaints

A tourist on Route 1 nearly caused an accident last Wednesday. The car was going about 20 miles over the speed limit and cut off several vehicles, including mine. I didn’t know Volvos could go that fast.

And if that wasn’t enough, the driver failed to stop at the stop sign, but decided against proceeding further because of oncoming traffic. So there he was, stuck halfway out in the travel lane, unable to go forward or backward.

I felt sorry for the driver, someone whose driving probably represents a harried life, with little time for the niceties. We’re lucky to live in Waldo, Maine, where things are a bit slower and less complicated.

Perchin’ prediction

I fished Moosehead Lake last Friday and took a salmon and several togue. Fish bit well and in addition to those fish landed, several were lost, making for a half-day of red-hot action.

In the garden

Green and wax beans are coming in like gangbusters now. I’ve had beans for supper every night this past week. Green peppers are big enough for picking and I had my first mess of fresh-picked peas (bless my pea-pickin’ heart, as Tennessee Ernie Ford was fond of saying) last week, with plenty more on the vine.

Here’s a bit on summer squash. They keep well cut and frozen, no blanching required. The finished product works well in recipes, although they are a bit too soft for frying.
