Saturday afternoon crash slows traffic

A Route 1 car crash Aug. 3 tied up traffic in both directions for about an hour.

According to Sgt Dan Fitzpatrick, at approximately 12:50 p.m., a car driven by Howard Caine, 50, of Bangor was heading north on Searsport Avenue and attempted to turn left onto Old Searsport Avenue by Lupine Cottage.

The car directly behind Caine was driven by Leslie Greenleaf, 57, of Searsport. Police say Greenleaf either did not see Caine's car or was distracted and rear-ended Caine's vehicle.

Both drivers, along with one female passenger and two juvenile passengers in Greenleaf's car were taken to the hospital for treatment of bruises and abrasions from seat belts.

Witnesses said Caine's car was stopped with the turn signal on. Police said there may be charges issued but that has not yet been determined.

Belfast Ambulance and Fire Department also responded to the incident.

One witness said, " ... traffic began to move around 1:30 p.m. again, but the residual backups took some time to clear."

Readers are reminded that an arrest or summons does not constitute a finding of guilt. An individual charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at criminal proceedings.
