Belfast — The city will celebrate its boating traditions the weekend of Aug. 16-18 with the 12th annual Harbor Fest, sponsored by Belfast Rotary Club.

Music, food and fun will be in the making all weekend in and around the harbor and along the waterfront at Steamboat Landing, Heritage Park and the Boathouse, and on Front Street between Main and Commercial streets. Special this year will be an appearance by Miss Maine 2019 Carolyn Brady.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Friday with food from several local restaurants, beverages, live music and a charity auction under the big tent to benefit Waldo Community Action Partners. Featured artist is Susan Tobey White.

Saturday kicks off with a 7:30 a.m. pancake breakfast at the Boathouse and a 5K Bug Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. starting in the parking lot at Union and Miller streets. Male and female winners will take home 20 pounds of "bugs" (lobsters). Go to for more info or to register.

Vendors will be located throughout the park and there will be live music in the Steamboat Landing gazebo all day. Events include kids' activities galore (including touch-a-truck), boat tours of the harbor, round-trips by boat to Young's Lobster Pound, free rowing around the harbor, a Classic Boat Show, a 4-mile Come Boating! Regatta for rowers in all types of vessels, the National Boat Building Challenge (build a boat in four hours, then launch and race it), tours of Front Street Shipyard, a beer garden and a puppet show.

Saturday night's barbecue dinner at 6 p.m. offers pulled pork and barbecued chicken with sides of cornbread, baked beans, coleslaw, drink and dessert.

On Sunday Come Boating! again will offer free rowing, and boating tours will continue. Highlighting the day will be the annual hilarious Cardboard Boat Challenge, beginning at 10 a.m., with several prizes, including a trophy for the most spectacular sinking.

Sunday lunch is the Habitat for Humanity Lobster Gala, noon to 3 p.m., with live music under the big tent. For non-lobster eaters, hamburgers and hot dogs will be available.
