Portland — When it comes to swimrun, a sport in its infancy, it would be tough to find a more seasoned competitor than Belfast Area High School graduate Matt Hurley.

Hurley, a 2002 graduate who was part of the school’s swim, cross-country and outdoor track-and-field teams, prevailed — along with teammate John Stevens — against 450 competitors on Sunday morning, Aug. 11 in the fourth annual Casco Bay Islands SwimRun.

Interestingly enough, swimrun, aptly named, combines Hurley’s two passions, swimming and running, into an endurance race that alternates between running and open-water swimming.

The Casco Bay Islands SwimRun pairs teammates, tethered with a long cord (they race 10 to 30 yards apart, 10 yards on the swim, 30 on the run), as the duo traverse the cold ocean waters and 10 islands in Portland Harbor.

Hurley of Boulder, Colo., and Stevens of Portland prevailed in the long course (17 miles of running and 4 miles of swimming), while a short course (9 miles of running and 2 miles swimming) also was available.

It was the fourth straight year Hurley and Stevens won the event's long version.
