Snow Marine Park in Rockland Maine was the setting for the 1st Annual Karen’s “Energy 4 Life” Cancer 5k Run/Walk on Saturday September 29th. The event was started by Susan Ware Page and Rebecca Ware McLaughlin with the guidance of Russ Wolfertz in memory of their Mother Karen Ware.

Cool, breezy, and sometimes rainy weather did not stop runners/walkers and nearly 60 volunteers from working together to raise money to fight cancer Saturday morning. There were approximately 160 registrants between runners and walkers, nearly 30 event sponsors and many generous donations made towards the cause.

When all was said and done, nearly $11,00.00 was raised and will be donated to the Maine Cancer Foundation directed towards cancer research and Maritime Energy’s “Energy 4 Life” fund which helps local people affected with this terrible disease. All money raised will remain in the state of Maine.

“The community involvement for Karen’s Walk in memory of my loving Mother and to fight cancer has been so touching. The support from runners, walkers, sponsors, donors and volunteers has been incredible and I can’t thank people enough for their generosity. Our goal is to help fight cancer and to make a difference, so hopefully someday families don’t have to go through the heartbreak we have experienced,” stated Susan Ware Page.

The overall winner of the race was Chris Roman, with a time of 21:37. The overall winner in the female division was Kelly Hall with a time of 25:14. All of the results can be found at www.coolrunning.com
