29th annual Book & Bake Sale July 21 supports town library

Jul 09, 2018

Searsmont — Once a year, Searsmont Town Library holds a sale of books, baked goods and treasures from "Grandma's Attic" to generate operating funds.

This year, the 29th annual Book and Bake Sale is on tap for Saturday, July 21, 9 a.m. to noon, at the Searsmont Community Building. The event, which will be held rain or shine, will include its traditional “Grandma’s Attic” yard sale, along with a silent auction.

“This is the Searsmont library’s once-a-year fund raising event,” said Joyce Sirota, chairman of the library’s board of trustees. “It generates $7,000 or more in three hours, about a third of the library’s annual budget."

The library board, Friends of the Searsmont Library and 40 or more volunteers make the event possible, helping to set up, run, and take down the books, baked goods, and yard sale and auction items.

Attendees can expect to choose from thousands of hardcover and paperback books for adults and children at the book sale, and pies, cakes, and cookies at the bake sale. There will be almost 1,000 yard sale items, ranging from bicycles and bowls to baskets, and more than 100 auction items ,including building supplies, craft items, jewelry, art, and nearly two dozen gift certificates to local restaurants, salons, and other local businesses.

Funds raised through the Book and Bake Sale allow the library to purchase new books.

Searsmont Town Library has more than 1,200 patrons from Searsmont, Belmont, Appleton, Morrill, Belfast and other communities. It offers ebooks, high-speed computers, wireless internet, and programs for students, a reading program for families with small children, adult programs, and exhibits of work by local artists.

“It is a true community resource,” Sirota said. “And the Book and Bake Sale gives hundreds of people the chance to browse hardcovers and paperbacks, eat fantastic baked goods, (and) leave with a good book to read, something for the home or garden, or a wonderful auction item.”

The Searsmont Community Building is on South Main Street (corner of Routes 131 and 173). For more information about the Searsmont Town Library’s annual sale, or to offer an item for the silent auction, go to searsmont.com or call the library at 342-5549.
