35th annual Trek set for June 14-16

New route starts and ends in Brunswick
Jun 07, 2019

For 35 years, the Lung Association’s Trek Across Maine has drawn in hundreds, and now thousands of cyclists to ride 180 miles over three days through Maine communities.

This year 1,400 cyclists and 700 volunteers will take part in the event, traveling a new route, marking the 35th anniversary ride, from June 14 to June 16. This year the Trek will not end in Belfast, as it has in the past.

Trekkers aim to raise over $1.3 million to support the American Lung Association mission to research, educate, and advocate to prevent lung disease and promote lung health.

The American Lung Association is asking local drivers and residents for their support, patience, and extra care as the cyclists make their way through Brunswick, Lewiston, Waterville and surrounding cities and towns.

Rain or shine, Trekkers are enthusiastic about enjoying the scenery as they pass through towns across Central Maine. The Trek brings in cyclists ranging in skill and age, support vehicles, medical vehicles and police escorts through the small towns and can cause traffic delays and congestion on the roads.

The three-day Trek always falls on Father’s Day weekend, this year on June 14-16. The event starts at the Brunswick Rec Center and travels through Harpswell, Freeport, Lewiston, Belgrade, Waterville, Augusta and Bath, ending back in Brunswick on Sunday.

Along the route, some areas can experience more traffic slowdowns than others. Law enforcement officers will be positioned at all major intersections where cyclists need to pass through traffic. Motorcycle officers and state police vehicles will drive the Trek route to ensure the safety of motorists and Trek cyclists.

Local drivers play a key role in making the Trek safe and fun for everyone. We appreciate the cooperation and ask for your patience and care. Please slow down and share the road with families, friends and neighbors.

The three-day Trek schedule is as follows:

Friday, June 14, participants ride from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Starting line is at the Brunswick Rec Center; Day 1 finish line at Bates College in Lewiston.
