9th annual 'Joy to Be Bald' fundraiser set for Oct. 14

Oct 10, 2018

Liberty — The ninth annual “Joy to be Bald” fundraiser kicks off Sunday, Oct. 14, from 1 to 6 p.m., beginning with a walk-a-thon starting at the tower on Stickney Hill and ending at Lori’s Café in Liberty.

Walkers can park at Lori’s Café, 504 Belfast-Augusta Road (Route 3), and transportation from Lori’s to the tower will be provided.

A chicken barbecue will follow, courtesy of Liberty Fire Department, at the Liberty Community Hall, 14 Junk Ave., at 2 p.m. A live auction, featuring auctioneer Tammie Mulvey, will begin at 2:30 p.m., with dozens of donations up for bidding. Auction donations can be dropped off at Lori’s Café or at Totman’s Auto, 369 Augusta Road, Belmont, during business hours.

What began in 2010 as a dare between Café owner Lori Mayer and a patron who offered to donate money to a mutual friend if Mayer agreed to shave her head, has grown into an annual event to offer financial assistance to local people battling cancer.

The event still bears the name of the original recipient and dear friend, Joy Mehuren, who succumbed to lung cancer in 2011. In 2015, the group was again heartbroken by the loss of friend and member of the Joy to be Bald team, Kelley Ripley, who had valiantly battled breast cancer.

The annual event features something for everyone. In addition to the 2.2-mile fundraising walk-a-thon that travels past Joy Lane and the barbecue, at the Community Hall there will be a bounce house, face painting and the annual head-shaving. The event will be held rain or shine.

This annual event is organized by a core of committed volunteers with the generosity of the community at large. T-shirts are sponsored by local businesses, all auction items are donated, and 100 percent of proceeds are disbursed locally.

This year’s event will benefit Charlie Adams of Liberty, diagnosed with lung cancer, and also an anonymous local person with kidney cancer, plus other local families struggling with cancer throughout the year.
