Celebration On Ice

Rockport — ROCKPORT – The holidays are right around the corner, and the talented figure skaters of the Midcoast are hard at work preparing for their annual “Celebration on Ice.” The show takes place Friday, December 5, at 6 p.m., at Midcoast Recreation Center, on Rte 90, and is part of the Camden-Rockport Chamber of Commerce Christmas By The Sea festivities. A popular holiday tradition, this show adds sparkle to the season and showcases the very best in local figure skating.

Each year, a special guest skater performs, as well as the local figure skaters. This year is no exception and the Skating Club of Maine, Coastal Region, is pleased to welcome ice dancers Una Donegan of Saco and Andrew Korda of Cape Elizabeth. Donegan and Korda are young Maine skaters making a name for themselves nationally. This month they placed first at the 2008 Eastern Sectionals in the Novice Ice division, a prelude to the national competition. Strong and athletic, they bring a special grace and beauty to their routines.

The pair have skated together since 2005, and in 2007 won gold in the U.S. Junior Nationals. Moving up to Novice level, the pair took silver in the Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships and the Quebec Summer Championships, capping off 2007 with a bronze at the Eastern Sectionals and the Nationals competition.

Following the Celebration on Ice, the skating club invites everyone in the audience to skate with Santa, another holiday tradition. The youngest members of the club’s Learn-to-Skate program escort Santa onto the ice for an hour of public skating. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season, and a chance to see some wonderful athletes in motion.

The Skating Club of Maine, Coastal Region, also offers lessons for children and adults. Classes are Wednesdays and Saturdays. A 501© non-profit organization, all proceeds benefit the club’s skating programs and scholarship fund.
