Belfast — Cold Comfort Theater will open a two-weekend production of Elinor Jones’ “A Voice of My Own” Friday night, Nov. 9, at the University of Maine’s Hutchinson Center, 80 Belmont Ave./Route 3.

Performances will be Fridays and Saturday s, Nov. 9, 10, 16 and 17, at 7 p.m.

Covering a broad spectrum of female writers from Sappho (born 625 BCE) to writers of the present day, six actors — Deb Fournier, Dorothy Wilson, Lynn Bushee, Kristen Frangoulis, Allison Morrill and Maggie Goscinski — point out not only the triumphs of women in literature, but also the discouragement, derision and disbelief to which they were too often subjected.

The play spans 26 centuries and evokes the words and feelings of women who frequently were obliged to hide behind anonymity or male names in order to practice their art … and from whom fantastic strength of character and indomitability were required. That they succeeded so brilliantly in their efforts is not only a tribute to these talented women in particular but also, in a more general sense, to the irrepressible spirit of the entire "other half" of humanity whose voice would not be denied.

Director Aynne Ames has produced this play a number of times over the last 20 years.

“Long before ‘me too’ or ‘time’s up,’ there was an understanding regarding the unfairness of the way women and their gifts were treated versus the acclaim given to men,” she said. “I’ve long thought this play should be required reading/presentation in every high school everywhere!”

Tickets for “A Voice of My Own” are $15 and may be purchased in advance at Left Bank Books, 106 Church St.; or at the door 30 minutes at the Hutchinson Center.
