BELFAST — Old Professor’s Bookshop, 99 Main St., invites the public to hear Professor Douglas (Doug) Allen discuss and sign his new book on Saturday, July 6, at 3 p.m. “Gandhi After 9/11, Creative Nonviolence and Sustainability” was published this year by Oxford University Press for the 150th anniversary of the birth of M.K. Gandhi. In it, Allen explains how Gandhi’s life shows how to counter the violence, lack of morality and unsustainable living of our post-9/11 world.

Allen, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Maine, is recognized as one of the world's leading Gandhi scholars. His earlier books include “The Philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi for the Twenty-First Century” (Lexington Books, 2008) and “Mahatma Gandhi” (a Critical Lives book published by Reaktion Books, 2011). These will also be available at the talk.

Professor Allen received the Maine Presidential Research and Creative Achievement Award, and the Distinguished Maine Professor Award. A peace and justice scholar and activist, Allen is a founder of the Maine Peace Action Committee at the University of Maine and the Education Coordinator of the Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine. This year he delivered major invited lectures in India in connection with Gandhi’s 150th birthday.

Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call 338-2006.
