'Amazing Race' introduces middle-schoolers to tech center

Feb 09, 2020
Middle-school students compete in annual program to introduce them to all that Waldo County Technical Center offers.

Waldo — Waldo County middle-schoolers recently participated in Waldo County Technical Center’s Amazing Race.

This annual event, held the week of Jan. 20, allowed seventh-graders from Troy Howard Middle School and eighth-graders from Drinkwater, Searsport and Mount View schools to participate in challenges from every program at the tech center.

Each program’s challenge was 5 minutes long and directly related to the career and technical skills taught within that class. For example, in Culinary, students raced to crack eggs, and in Graphic Design, students created a color wheel. Each group of students had to work together to solve these challenges and learned about not only what Waldo County Technical Center has to offer, but what it means to work as a team.

Each team was given matching bandanas and the winning team received WCTC string bags loaded with goodies provided by the MELMAC Education Foundation.

Next year, WCTC plans to conduct The Amazing Race for all seventh-graders in Waldo County, so students are exposed even earlier to career and technical education.
