Anglers Restaurant continues school support with halftime halfcourt shots

Searsport — Anglers Restaurant always has taken community involvement seriously, from donating items for spaghetti dinners to holding fundraising nights to support events at schools.

For the past few years the restaurant, which has locations in Searsport, Newport and Hamden, have worked with schools throughout the state to help raise funds with the organization's “Halftime Halfcourt Shot."

Anglers donates a $100 gift card to a school and the school, in turn, sells tickets at their varsity basketball home games for the chance for someone to win the gift card by making the halfcourt shot.

This year, 18 of the 35 schools contacted by Anglers particpate and "man, do we have some folks with some major skills," said Ryan A. Nickerson, general manager of Anglers Restaurant. "So far this season, out of the 18 schools participating, we’ve had 17 winners."

Those schools have raised a total of $2,730, he said.

"I did want to take a moment to mention a standout, Jeff Whitten," Nickerson said. "Jeff has won a total of three times in the past two seasons: 2013 at Penobscot Valley's final home game and this year at their first home game and again at one of Dexter’s home games. Let’s talk about skills … or maybe it’s just luck. Either way, we think it is pretty cool."

Nickerson said schools interested in learning more should call him at 323-4701 or email at

"With budget cuts happening throughout our state's education community, Anglers is thrilled to take part in helping our schools raise the necessary funds needed to purchase the supplies our schools need to thrive," Nickerson said.
