Angling for a cause

While Saturday was bright and sunny, temperatures were on the chilly side for Maine's free ice fishing weekend. Two local ice fishing derbies were held despite the cold weather, giving youths a taste of a state tradition and others a chance to catch up with friends and family.

By 10 a.m., Fair Haven Camps in Brooks had only a handful of people braving the frigid temperatures on on Lake Passagassawakeag. The family ice fishing derby raised funds to help support the camp and fund scholarships for future campers.

On Lake St. George in Liberty, Riley's Wish Winter Games and Derby attracted people not only to ice fish but to play games, ride fat tire bikes, eat, and enjoy music.

By 1:30 p.m., three youth anglers had taken several fish from the lake. Kierra Munro caught an 18 1/2-inch salmon weighing 2 pounds, 7 ounces; Josh Jewett caught a 19-inch salmon weighing 2.34 pounds and a 17-inch pickerel weighing 1.3 pounds; Krystal Porter caught a 17-inch largemouth bass weighing 2.34-pounds.

All proceeds benefit the Riley H. Boulay Memorial Scholarship Fund.
