Art enlivens August blooms in Aug. 10 tour

Engaging sculptures like this one and stained glass scenes enhance the blooming gardens around the house and studio of Linda Hause, 66 Congress St., Belfast, open Aug. 10 as part of Belfast Garden Club’s 2018 Open Garden Days.

Belfast — Hydrangea blooms and whimsical sculptures — like one of the legendary Bearfest bears — will greet visitors to the Open Garden Day Friday, Aug. 10, at the home and studio of Belfast artist Linda Hause.

Hause's Congress Street residence has a towering wisteria vine, started from a 6-inch slip 12 years ago, together with dozens of hostas and a growing number of perennials Hause says she has planted to attract pollinators and rid her yard of lawn.

Visitors will be invited indoors to enjoy the stained glass works, paintings and sculptures that Hause has made over three decades of creating art.

She helped establish the Bearfest community art event that ran from 2000 to 2003 and decorated five of the bears in it. One bear found its way into her living room. Another took on a new life and now stands, sporting flip-flops and an artist’s easel, beside her front door.

The Hause garden, at 66 Congress St. (between Miller and Pearl streets), can be seen Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. A $5 donation per visitor helps the Belfast Garden Club (belfastgardenclub.org) fund scholarships.
