Northampton, Mass. — The Belfast area will send five talented field hockey players — on two teams — to the National Indoor Championships after those athletes participated in the USA National Indoor regional qualifiers on Saturday, Dec. 30 at Smith College.

Maine Majestix, a field hockey club based out of Waterville, has players from Lawrence of Fairfield, Skowhegan, Mount Blue of Farmington, Messalonskee of Oakland, Winthrop and Belfast school districts on the U16 and U19 teams.

Belfast Area High School’s Brooke Richards plays on the U19 team, while BAHS’ Sarah Woods (sophomore), Emily Woods (sophomore) and Grace Hall  (freshmen) — in addition to Troy Howard Middle School eighth-grader Chelsea Gaiero, who played on four straight Busline League championship teams — are on the U16 team.

The Woods are identical twin sisters.

Richards, a standout junior goalie, verbally has committed to play collegiate field hockey at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Maine Majestix went 4-0-1 in the U-19 tourney. The team tied UN1TEDFH 1-1, defeated Cape Ann FHC White 2-1, bested Striker Stars 4 3-0, earned a 2-1 win over Wizards Gold and then beat North East Elite U19 Silver 4-0 to win the tournament.

With the win, the U-19s advance to play, along with 143 other teams, at the NICs on Feb. 22-24 in Richmond, Va.

Maine Majestix went 5-1 in the U-16 tourney and allowed only two goals throughout the event to place fifth among 16 teams. The team beat Electric Surge White 2-1, lost to Cape Ann Black 1-0, beat Striker Stars 3 4-0, beat HTC FHC U16 Blue 1-0, beat North East Elite U16 Silver 2-0 and beat Electric Surge Blue 1-0.

With that placement, the U16s advance to play, along with 143 other teams, on March 1-3 in Lancaster, Pa.
