Belfast — The Belfast football team went three-and-out on its first possession of the high school season on Friday night, Aug. 31 in its home clash with Waterville, while the Purple Panthers, on their first play from scrimmage, rushed for a 35-yard touchdown.

That first possession for the opponents more or less encapsulate the game as a whole for the squads as the visitors scored its points on the ground and the Lion defense struggled for most of the contest as the hosts ultimately fell to Waterville 45-12 at Dennis "Bear" Bryant Field.

“Our team played tremendously well through most of the second quarter,” said first-year Lion coach Gregg Bouchard. “And then we had four turnovers [three of which came prior to halftime] and that broke the kid’s spirits I think.”

Waterville held a 7-0 lead for much of the first half when Anthony Singh rushed for a 35-yard score, but Belfast's defense buttoned down after that, before three turnovers late in the second quarter put Waterville ahead 28-0 at halftime.

While the Purple Panthers had their way on the ground, the Lion defense did not allow a completed pass by Waterville throughout the 48-minute affair.

The Lions got a pair of late touchdowns against the Purple Panthers on a pair of deep throws from Dylan Abbott.

Abbott tossed a 70-yard pass to Jack Hansen and later a 90-yard bomb to Andrew Akles.

Bouchard said the Lions had “good defensive efforts” from Isaak Cunningham, Chris Kelley and Brian White, while Donald Resh, Cunningham, White and Kelley had quarterback sacks for the hosts.
