Belfast boys, Islesboro girls qualify for regional basketball playoffs

Mount View, Searsport squads, Lion girls left out of 'big dance'

Augusta — The regular season has drawn to a close for Midcoast high school basketball teams, as two of seven Waldo County squads — the Belfast boys and Islesboro girls — look to the future with their Maine Principals' Association regional tournaments to begin in the coming days.

Mount View of Thorndike and Searsport teams, along with the Belfast girls, failed to qualify for the postseason.

Islesboro Central School did not field a boys team this season.

The following are the final standings for Waldo County teams, in addition to playoff games for the Lion boys and Eagle girls:

Boys

In Class B North, Belfast (8-10, 44.8765 points) finished ninth and Mount View (1-17, 1.1728 points) 15th. Hermon (18-0, 195.2469 points) ended first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs, thus, the Lions are playoff-bound, while the Mustangs failed to qualify.

In the playoffs, the No. 9 Lions will play at No. 8 Caribou (6-12, 55.8025 points) on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. in a prelim encounter. The Lions and Vikings did not play each other during the regular season.

Should the Lions defeat the Vikings, they will advance to face the No. 1 Hawks on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 4:35 p.m. in the quarterfinals at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. The Lions and Hawks did not play each other during the regular season.

In Class C North, Searsport (8-10, 32.6852 points) finished 16th, while George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill (17-1, 153.4259 points) ended first in the 20-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs, thus, the Vikings failed to qualify.

Girls

In Class B North, Mount View (6-12, 26.2963 points) finished 14th and Belfast (0-18, no points) 15th. Hermon (16-2, 147.7160 points) placed first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs, thus, the Mustangs and Lions failed to qualify.

In Class C North, Searsport (6-12, 21.6049 points) finished 16th, while Houlton (18-0, 240.8642 points) finished first in the 20-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs, thus, the Vikings failed to qualify.

In Class D South, Islesboro (4-9, 20.5015 points) finished sixth, while Vinalhaven (18-0, 128.9034 points) finished first in the 11-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs, thus, the Eagles are playoff-bound.

In the playoffs, the No. 6 Eagles will face No. 3 Temple Academy of Waterville (11-7, 51.1672 points) on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 8:30 a.m. in the quarterfinals at the Augusta Civic Center. In the regular season, the Eagles lost to the Bereans 58-44 on Islesboro.
